The Return of Guillermo Ochoa to Club America

Eight years after leaving for European football, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa returns to his beloved team, Club America.

The Eagles confirmed the return of the Mexican national team goalkeeper on Tuesday night with several messages posted on their social media accounts.

Ochoa, 34, replaces Argentine Agustin Marchesin, who was sold last week to Porto in the Portuguese league.

"Goalkeeper @yosoy8a arrives at El Nido. Welcome back Memo!", the club posted on Twitter.

They also shared a couple of videos, one in which Ochoa says, dressed in the current team's uniform: "You don't support America, you are America." The last video confirming his return showed the goalkeeper's best moments during his time at the club.

Ochoa became one of America's idols during his tenure with the team from 2004 to 2011, during which he helped win the Clausura 2005 tournament and the 2004-2005 Champions of Champions title.

The goalkeeper, who has been selected four times for World Cup squads, starting in Brazil 2014 and continuing in Russia 2018, left America in 2011 to join Ajaccio in the French league. He also played for Malaga and Granada in Spanish football. His most recent team was Standard Liege, with whom he won the Belgian Cup last season.

During his first stint in Mexico, where he debuted at the age of 19 on February 15, 2004, under the management of Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker, he played in 204 matches for Club America. He conceded 256 goals and kept a clean sheet on 55 occasions.

The club did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement with Ochoa.

With this signing, Club America covers one of the gaps left by the sales of three of its star players: Marchesin, defender Edson Alvarez, and Colombian midfielder Mateus Uribe.
