Alphabet, the parent company of Google, plans to spin off its drone projects for product delivery and its balloon projects for internet connectivity into independent companies.
The Loon project aims to place balloons in the atmosphere to improve internet connections in remote areas, while Wing focuses on using drones for product delivery. Both projects were part of Google's larger program called X.
According to AFP, both projects will become independent companies within Alphabet, with the intention of fully separating them from the rest of Google's activities.
"The goal of X is to create revolutionary technologies and turn ideas into viable concepts," said Astro Teller, project manager of Alphabet, in a blog post.
"Now that the core technology for these projects exists, Loon and Wing are ready to offer their products to the world," he added.
James Ryan will be responsible for Wing and Alastair Westgarth for Loon.
