FIFA issues warning to Croatian player who praised Ukraine

The FIFA issued a formal warning to a player from the Croatian national team who praised Ukraine in a video after the Balkan team eliminated host Russia in the World Cup quarter-finals.

The video shows Croatian defender Domagoj Vida shouting, "Glory to Ukraine". Retired football player Ognjen Vukojevic then states, "This victory is for Dynamo and for Ukraine... Let's go, Croatia!"

The images angered several Russian users on social media, amid the ongoing political tensions between their country and Ukraine.

Vida and Vukojevic played together at Dynamo Kiev, Ukraine. On Saturday, during the penalty shootout victory over Russia, Vida stood out with a headed goal in extra time and converted a penalty kick.

"We can confirm that the FIFA disciplinary committee has issued a warning to player Domagoj Vida, due to his statement in a video after the World Cup match between Russia and Croatia," the organization announced on Sunday.

Vida told Sport Express newspaper that his video was part of a personal message.

"There is no politics in football. It was a joke for my friends at Dynamo Kiev," he told the newspaper. "I love Russians and Ukrainians."

Tensions have been high since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, which was part of Ukraine. The Ukrainian government accuses Russia of arming separatists who control parts of the country's east, and of even backing them with its military forces.

The FIFA can fine or suspend players for political statements during the World Cup. Three Swiss players were fined for making hand gestures, referring to the Albanian flag, during a 2-1 victory over Serbia in the group stage. (D)
