Spain lost for the fourth time against the host of a World Cup, having done so in Italy-1934, Brazil-1950, and against South Korea in 2002, in the edition that country co-hosted with Japan.
La Roja took the lead with an own goal by Sergey Ignashevich in the 12th minute. Russia equalized with a penalty converted by Artem Dzyuba (41), after Gerard Piqué touched the ball with his hand inside the area.
