Columbia defeats Senegal 1-0 to advance to the round of 16
The Columbia national team defeated Senegal 1-0 and secured a spot in the round of 16 as the winner of Group H in the 2018 Russia World Cup. Jose Pekerman's team struggled but accomplished their first objective.
After the match, Pekerman's team celebrated. This time, they didn't dance, but they all hugged each other. Including James Rodriguez, who left the field annoyed at the 30th minute of the match against Senegal.
With the victory, Columbia accumulated six points, while Japan -who lost 1-0 against eliminated Poland- and Senegal finished with four points. The European team closed the group with three.
Columbia suffered a hard blow at the 30th minute when James Rodriguez had to leave the field. The creative midfielder, who had been a standout player in the previous match against Poland, seemed to suffer a recurrence of the muscular problem that had forced him to be a substitute in the first game.
Yerry Mina scored at the 74th minute with a header from a corner kick.
