South Korea may be out of the World Cup, but with their 2-0 victory, they also took Germany, the last champion and now disappointed aspirant, with them to defend the title of the 2014 World Cup.

The defending champion Germany suffered a surprising elimination in the initial phase of the World Cup on Wednesday, losing 2-0 against South Korea and finishing last in Group F, behind Sweden and Mexico, who qualified for the Round of 16, and South Korea itself, in third place.
Germany, which hadn't been eliminated in the first round of a World Cup since 1938, was a shadow of the dominant team that was crowned four years ago and never found a way in their three group stage matches.
Kim Young-gwon scored the 1-0 goal in injury time, with VAR assistance. The referee initially ruled it out, supported by the linesman who indicated an offside, but the VAR showed them that he was onside and therefore the goal stood.
In the ninth minute of stoppage time, Son Heung-min sealed Germany's fate with a goal almost in the last second, with the goal unguarded, as German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had advanced to the opponent's area to join his teammates in a set piece to seek an equalizer that never came and instead extended the result in favor of the Asians. A shameful farewell for the defending champion.
Germany showed the same problems against the South Korean team as in their other two matches against Mexico and Sweden and never dominated the game.
As the minutes went by, the pressure increased but Germany couldn't score against an organized South Korean team that knocked them out in the end.
