Costa Rica's Selection Fails in Russia 2018
The Costa Rican selection could not replicate its outstanding campaign in Brazil 2014, a tournament in which they reached the quarterfinals (being eliminated in the penalty shootout against the Netherlands). In Russia 2018, the 'Ticos' were eliminated early after losing their first two matches and are, so far, the only team that has not scored a goal in the current competition.
This has generated a barrage of criticism against Óscar Ramírez, Costa Rica's coach. The worst part is that, according to the coach's own statement, he has received anonymous threats against him and his family.
"I feel greatly upset and hurt at the same time. I wanted to bring joy to the country. I wanted it to not be experienced like it was. It was a difficult group. We have tried to do our best. Personally, there have been allegations and it's embarrassing to talk about it. Insinuations have been heard. It has been turned into a soap opera, even saying that I wanted to quit and it's false," stated Ramírez to EFE agency.
The Costa Rican coach did not back down and assured that if someone "touches his family," they will have to face him.
"They have played with one's dignity. They have said that I have been cowardly and I do not allow that. I have tried to do my best and I have slept well. If they touch my family, they should know that they will have a tiger in front of them," warned Ramírez.
