Iceland
Iceland defeated Croatia. It happened on June 11, 2017, just a year ago. Both teams played in the same group in the qualifiers for Russia 2018. In the first leg in Zagreb, the Croatians won 2-0, but there was revenge: in the return leg in Reykjavik, the Icelanders won 1-0.
The only goal of that match was scored by Hörour Björgvin Magnússon in the 89th minute. In Russia 2018, the right-back has started in the matches against Argentina and Nigeria. He will also start against Croatia, just as he did in that match played in Iceland.
In the qualifiers Group I, the Icelanders qualified directly to Russia 2018 as winners of their group, while the Croatians had to face Greece in the playoffs, whom they easily defeated.
Both have coincided in Group D of Russia 2018 and this Tuesday they will play a crucial match. Croatia is the only team that is already qualified, but they have not yet determined their position. Argentina, Nigeria, and Iceland are playing for their lives. What does each team need? Depor explains:
- If Argentina defeats Nigeria in the other match of the group and Iceland loses to Croatia, the South Americans will qualify in second place for the round of 16.
- If Argentina and Iceland win their respective matches, they will both define the second place in the group based on goal difference.
- If Nigeria defeats Argentina, the African team will qualify. They will also determine the first place against Croatia based on goal difference.
- If Nigeria draws with Argentina and Iceland loses, the African team will qualify in second place.
- If Nigeria draws with Argentina and Iceland wins, Europeans and Africans will define the second place in the group based on goal difference.
