The coach of Germany, Joachim Löw, admitted today that the current world champion left many open spaces and lost the ball in a never-before-seen way in their World Cup debut against Mexico, whom he recognized as a strong and fast team.
"We were not precise with our passes and we lost the ball in a way we have never seen before. We played with short passes and that made it possible for our opponent to easily take the ball away from us. We were not concentrated," said Löw in the press conference after the match in which Mexico defeated the world champion 1-0.
The German coach emphasized that his team played "poorly in the first half", but recovered and did much better in the second half, when they had opportunities to tie, despite Mexico continuing to reach their area on dangerous counterattacks.
"We are disappointed, we have lost the first match and it is abnormal for us. We did not play as we are used to, attacking with fast passes. We need to learn from this and do better in the next matches," he affirmed.
Löw praised the team led by Juan Carlos Osorio and criticized his own team for leaving spaces to a team that stands out precisely for its speed and counterattacks.
"Mexico has been a strong team in the past two years. They have a good counterattack and transition very well from defense to attack. They have been demonstrating this for two years. They are experts in having the ball. They have very fast players and they take advantage of the spaces very well," defined the German coach about the rival.
Nevertheless, he stressed that Germany must "analyze what has happened", because the result and the game, especially in the first half, "do not correspond to the image" of the team.
"But we already have experience and we will recover. It is difficult to lose the first match, but we will surely win the second one. We will not stray from our path and we will exploit our strengths," Löw pointed out.
