The situation of the Spain National Team worries everyone, including FIFA. Just a few hours after learning about the dismissal of Julen Lopetegui, the president of the organization, Gianni Infantino, commented on his situation in light of Russia 2018.
"It's unusual and not an ideal situation. I found out just now, in the conference room. It's true that the player's statute regulation refers to transfers between players and coaches at clubs. It's a unique situation," said Infantino on Wednesday after the 68th FIFA Congress held in Moscow.
Julen Lopetegui was dismissed on Wednesday after it was announced on Tuesday that he will take charge of Real Madrid next season. Fernando Hierro will replace him in the World Cup.
"It's something that will surely generate a lot of discussion in Spain. But surely Rubiales (president of the Federation) and his entire team, who are football people, will have evaluated all the options to make such a decision. Although it's unusual and not an ideal situation before the World Cup," he continued.
Despite this situation, Gianni Infantino is confident that Spain will have a good performance in Russia 2018. "Twelve years ago, Spain had a lot of problems and became champion, in football you never know, sometimes negative situations turn into positive ones," he concluded.
