With deep sadness, Mario Götze lamented not being considered for the 2018 World Cup, after the release of Germany's squad list. The author of the only goal in the previous final, to give the fourth star to the Germans, did not make it onto Joachim Löw's list to defend the title.
"Of course I'm sad that I'm not attending the World Cup. I will do everything I can to get back to the squad of our national team. I wish the boys, the coaches and the team behind the team a good time in Russia and I will keep my fingers crossed for everyone to be world champions," wrote Mario Götze.
The Germany coach admitted that he felt a lot of pressure when putting together the list, knowing that Mario Götze was the hero of the 2014 title.
"It was a spontaneous idea. Whether it was good afterwards... I don't know," said Joachim Löw. "At that moment, you don't think about the things that can happen later. I made the mistake of making the phrase public later."
