The controversial German coach Joachim Löw responded strongly this Friday to the criticism against Sandro Wagner, forward of Bayern Munich, after his resignation from the national team for not being included in the preliminary list of the German National Team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
"I immediately retire from the national team", Wagner said last Thursday to the German newspaper Bild. "I would be lying if I said I'm not disappointed. The World Cup would have been something extraordinary", he added.
"For me, it is clear that my way of being, always open, honest and direct, does not apparently match the coaching staff", estimated the German striker.
However, the issue wouldn't end there. This Friday, Joachim Löw came forward and launched an attack against the now former German forward. "I feel it as a criticism of his colleagues. He presents some of them as if they were perfect idiots. As if they are with us only because they don't express their opinions", he criticized.
"I can understand that he is disappointed, but I find his reaction a bit exaggerated. Everyone who knows us knows how we always engage with the players for them to give their opinion and express their criticism. This is very important to us", added the German coach about the decision made by the forward.
Wagner hoped to earn a place in Russia 2018 by signing with Bayern Munich in January, but he lost the bet. Instead, Löw called up experienced Mario Gómez and young Timo Werner as forwards for the German National Team.
