Controversy over Markarián's statements about Peru's qualification to the World Cup

There was a small controversy regarding Sergio Markarián's statements, where he indicated that when he was a coach in Peru, he left a list of 30 eligible players, who are the ones that have now qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Later in the interview, he emphasized that many players from that list of 30 have gained more professional experience, as previously they did not have a single international match.

The former Peruvian coach also said that the qualification is solely Gareca's merit and that he had nothing to do with it, but that he did congratulate his counterpart for the achievements with the Peruvian national team.
