Italy fails to qualify for the 2018 World Cup
The Italian national team confirmed its absolute debacle by not going beyond a 0-0 draw against Sweden in the World Cup playoff second leg. In the first leg, the 'azzurra' had lost 1-0, so in the overall result they failed to qualify for the World Cup Russia 2018.
'La Nazzionale' will miss its first World Cup since 1958. Only on that occasion, curiously in Sweden, and in the first World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930, to which it was invited but did not attend, the international football tournament did not include the Italian team.
Italy pushed hard for a goal to at least force extra time in the San Siro stadium match, but they failed to break Sweden's solid defense, which will return to play in a World Cup after missing the last two editions.
It is one of the most negative moments in the history of the 'azzurra' team, four-time world champions, and its captain Gianluigi Buffon, who ended his personal story with the national team of his country in tears after a 20-year career.
