Italian Football Federation President Resigns after World Cup Exclusion
Carlo Tavecchio, until now president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), announced today his resignation after Italy's exclusion from the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The former Italian football top official finally succumbed to the pressures coming from all sides to present his resignation and communicated his decision at the beginning of a meeting of the Football Federal Council of the European country, which he himself had convened for this Monday in Rome.
Tavecchio, who cried in front of television cameras in an interview broadcasted this Sunday by the private broadcaster Mediaset, called on all members of the Federal Council to follow his steps.
"Ambitions and political predation prevented analyzing the reasons for this result," he accused.
After Italy's elimination from the 2018 World Cup in the match against Sweden last week, Tavecchio tried to resist and offered the head of coach Gian Piero Ventura, announcing that this Monday he would present a reform program.
But from the Sports Minister, Luca Lotti, to the President of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), Giovanni Malagó, as well as representatives of football players and referees, demanded his resignation.
Finally, he was also abandoned by the League of Amateurs, of which he was the president for more than three decades, while his proposal to appoint Carlo Ancelotti as the new national coach of the Italian team foundered on the interested party's refusal.
Similarly, Max Allegri, Roberto Mancini, and now long times are expected to designate the successor to Ventura.
