COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Michigan State’s secondary and receiver depth took a hit last week and the team will also be without a starter on offense.
Starting right guard Kristian Phillips is unavailable for the Spartans (1-0) in Saturday’s game (3:40 p.m., BTN) at Maryland (1-0), according to the Big Ten availability report released two hours before kickoff. The redshirt sophomore played all 64 offensive snaps in his starting debut as Michigan State won 16-10 at home against Florida Atlantic last week.
The others listed as out for the Spartans against the Terrapins are wide receiver Alante Brown, safeties Dillon Tatum and Khalil Majeed, defensive tackle Ben Roberts and defensive end Avery Dunn, who was the only player listed out last week. Brown, Tatum and Majeed all suffered long-term injuries against the Owls, first-year coach Jonathan Smith announced Monday. There are no players listed as questionable for Michigan State.
With a reworked offensive line that returned only one starter, the Spartans went just six deep last week in tackles Brandon Baldwin, Ashton Lepo and Stanton Ramil, left guard Luke Newman, center Tanner Miller and Phillips. It’s unclear who will replace Phillips and redshirt sophomore Gavin Broscious could be in the mix. The Spartans struggled establishing the run last week and will be challenged even more at Maryland.
