Tough defeat
The 24-year-old national athlete, champion in October 2019 at the ATP Challengers in Campinas and Santo Domingo, lost in 1 hour and 13 minutes to Canadian Brayden Schnur by two sets to zero (6-1 and 6-4).
Second set recovery
After a first set in which Brayden Schnur, ranked 191 in the ATP rankings, devastated in 29 minutes, Juan Pablo Varillas recovered in the second set to tie it 4-4. However, the Canadian broke his serve in the ninth game and later defended his serve to win the match.
Next opponent
Brayden Schnur, 25, will face American Sebastian Korda in the second qualifying round, who defeated his compatriot Mitchell Krueger 2-0.
