Mauricio Fiol Suspended for Doping
After serving an initial suspension at the Pan American Games held in our country, Mauricio Fiol has been suspended for eight years after testing positive for steroids just before his anticipated return to competition.
Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) Announcement
This Tuesday, the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) announced that the 36-year-old swimmer tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid, in six separate tests conducted between June 30 and September 17 last year.
Prior Infraction
The FINA panel of judges considered these tests as a single violation. Fiol previously tested positive for the same steroid at the 2015 Pan American Games, resulting in the revocation of his silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly.
Provisional Suspension
After completing a four-year suspension, Fiol would have competed in the 2019 Pan American Games. However, he was provisionally suspended just before the continental event. FINA has stated that Fiol will not be eligible to compete until August 2, 2027.
