Peruvian squash player Diego Elías, gold medalist at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, has started the 2019-2020 season of the PSA international circuit with strength. And it's because the 'Puma' is already in the quarterfinals of the US Open of Squash, which is taking place in Philadelphia.
Elías debuted against the Englishman George Parker and defeated him by 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, and 11-4. Then, his opponent was the Welshman Joel Makin, whom he also defeated, but this time in three sets (11-5, 11-9, and 11-8). Makin has never been able to overcome the Peruvian.
The challenge in the quarterfinals will be much more difficult, as Diego, currently number seven in the world, will have to face the Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad, who holds the fourth position in the PSA ranking.
This is not the first time they will face each other. They have clashed five times and Egypt's player has triumphed in all of them. However, the Peruvian has already shown that he can break bad streaks: he had never defeated the Colombian Miguel Rodriguez, but he defeated him in Lima 2019.
The decisive match with Gawad will be this Wednesday, October 9th, through PSA's Facebook Live at 6:30 pm.
