Peruvian Athletes to Compete in the World Athletics Championship in Doha
The racewalkers Luis Henry Campos, José Carlos Mamani, and Leyde Guerra will represent Peru in the World Athletics Championship that will take place from September 27th to October 6th in Doha.
Campos, who already participated in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, will compete in the 50-kilometer racewalk, while Mamani and Guerra will do the same in the 20-kilometer racewalk.
The Peruvian delegation for the world athletics event was reduced from eight to three members due to injuries and the short recovery time compared to the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, held in early August.
The marathon runners Christhian Pacheco and Gladys Tejeda, gold medalists in the Pan American Games, decided not to compete in Doha as the tight schedule prevented them from having proper preparation.
Injury also prevented the participation of long-distance runner Inés Melchor and racewalkers Kimberly García and Mary Luz Andia.
Melchor, who had planned to run the 10,000 meters in Doha at the beginning of the year, was unable to compete in the Pan American Games marathon due to radiculopathy in the lumbar vertebrae, a neuropathy that affects the sensory and motor function of a nerve root and can cause pain in different parts of the body.
On the other hand, García suffered a fracture in the tibial head during the 20-kilometer racewalk in Lima 2019, where she won the silver medal. EFE
