The Carbonero, leader of the Clausura and Annual Table, is going through a great moment.

Peñarol, leader of the Clausura Tournament and the Overall Table, extended their great present on Sunday with the thrashing against River Plate at the Centenario, achieving their fifth consecutive success.

After an irregular first semester, in which they won the Apertura but suffered defeats in their matches in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, the Carbonero got back on track after being eliminated from the Intermedio, a tournament they finished with a couple of victories.

And Peñarol's start in the Clausura was not the best, as they drew with Cerro and La Luz, but then entered a triumphant dynamic that was expanded against Darsenero.

On September 2nd, Matías Arezo gave Peñarol the victory against Boston River at Parque Artigas, while on October 7th, due to a players' strike, they defeated Defensor Sporting 2-1 at El Campeón del Siglo, thanks to goals from El Cepillo González and Sebastián Rodríguez, from a penalty, reversing the result.

Six days later, Deportivo Maldonado, who played as a local at the Centenario, became the victim of Manya with a solitary goal from Arezo, while on October 18th, Dario's team came back from 0-2 against Montevideo City Torque in the same stadium with goals from Arezo and Rodríguez, scored twice.

This Sunday, October 22nd, González, Camilo Mayada, and Arezo inscribed their names in the 3-0 victory against River Plate, allowing Peñarol to achieve their fifth consecutive triumph.

Since when did Peñarol win five consecutive games?

To find a similar streak for the Carbonero, you have to go back to August 2021 when the team, under the direction of Mauricio Larriera, defeated River, Cerro Largo, Sporting Cristal, Progreso, and once again Cristal, sealing their qualification for the CONMEBOL Sudamericana semifinals.

A draw with Sud América - which preceded a great start to the Clausura and elimination from the continental competition at the hands of Athletico Paranaense - interrupted the team's ideal run.

Although Plaza Colonia won that Apertura, which started late due to the delay in the previous season due to the coronavirus pandemic, Peñarol ended up being crowned Uruguayan champions of 2021, after winning the Clausura and the Overall Table and defeating Patablanca in the championship final.

To find a longer streak, you have to go back to the 2017 season when between August 20th and November 19th they accumulated 12 consecutive victories under the command of Leo Ramos, in a spectacular start to the Clausura that they won from start to finish.
