Botafogo from Brazil announced the signing of Uruguayan football player Mateo Ponte on Wednesday, right-back formed in Danubio and champion of the world with the Uruguayan U-20 National Team in the Argentina 2023 Youth World Cup.
The Rio de Janeiro team reported that the player, born on May 24, 2003, has already passed the medical examination, signed a contract until December 2026, and greeted his new teammates, among whom are his compatriots Diego Abreu and Diego Hernández.
Ponte has been part of Danubio since 2013, joining the team's youth system when he was just ten years old and being able to make his debut in the First Division on Thursday, February 4, 2021, against River Plate at Parque Saroldi for the fourth round of the 2020 Clausura Tournament.
The right-back played 23 official matches with the first team of Danubio, scoring a goal (at the end of February against Plaza Colonia for the fourth round of the 2023 Apertura Tournament).
The 20-year-old player was a starter for the Uruguayan U-20 National Team led by Marcelo Broli, who won the silver medal at the South American Youth Championship in Colombia and was crowned champion of the U-20 World Cup held in Argentina.
In addition to Brazilian football becoming an increasingly common destination for Uruguayan players, it is worth noting that a new Uruguayan right-back will be present in the land where the best in this position are formed, remembering that Joaquín Piquerez is at Palmeiras, Camilo Cándido plays at Bahía, Guillermo Varela is at Flamengo, and José Luis Rodríguez at Vasco da Gama.
