As strange as it may sound and as curious as it may seem, Peñarol will host Defensa y Justicia this Tuesday for the CONMEBOL Sudamericana in a match where they will simply play for their honor.
The aurinegro team was eliminated from the tournament after losing in their four appearances. The schedule has them playing the last two matches at home, a situation that many teams desire before any tournament draw. However, the match against Defensa y Justicia, and the final one against América Mineiro, are a torment for a team that had high hopes for the tournament.
The team coached by Alfredo Arias debuted with a heavy defeat in Brazil against América Mineiro, losing 4-1. In the second match, they hosted Millonarios at the CDS and lost 2-0.
The aurinegros traveled to Argentina with the hope of winning against Defensa y Justicia and thus getting back into the series. That night they started the match well, but ended up losing again 4-1. And their last outing was a 3-1 defeat against Millonarios in Bogota.
In addition to the international situation, there is a poor start in the Torneo Intermedio, where last Friday, the team debuted with a 3-2 loss against La Luz.
This put coach Alfredo Arias in the eye of the storm, but president Ignacio Ruglio publicly backed him.
Tuesday's match is a mere formality to fulfill the schedule and for the players and coaching staff, an obligation to restore the honor of Peñarol.
