Peñarol catches up this Monday when, at 8:00 PM, they face Racing for the 14th round of the Apertura Tournament at Estadio Centenario.
The carbonero is already the champion of the aforementioned tournament due to the 2-2 draw between Nacional and Defensor Sporting in the same round, which took place this Sunday at Parque Franzini.
After this game, there will still be one final round to be played next weekend.
The current standings are as follows:
Team | Pts | J | G | E | P | GF | GC |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Peñarol (c) | 30 | 13 | 9 | 3 | 1 | 22 | 10 |
Nacional | 26 | 14 | 7 | 5 | 2 | 24 | 11 |
Defensor Sp | 24 | 14 | 6 | 6 | 2 | 26 | 13 |
Cerro Largo | 24 | 14 | 6 | 6 | 2 | 13 | 10 |
So far, Peñarol and Nacional are first and second in the Apertura, so they would not play in the same series of the Torneo Intermedio, meaning there would not be a derby in that championship, unless both reach the final.
That's why we have to wait for the next round to see how everything ends.
Peñarol will finish first, no matter the results. However, we have to see if Nacional maintains the second position.
In order for that not to happen, Álvaro Gutiérrez's team should lose against Montevideo City Torque in the final round, and Defensor Sporting beat Danubio in Jardines del Hipódromo, or Cerro Largo do the same in their visit to Deportivo Maldonado.
If both violetas and arachanes win, Nacional would finish fourth, so there would not be a derby in the next series of the upcoming tournament.
But if only one of the two wins, they will finish second and Nacional third. Then there will be a derby against Peñarol.
On the other hand, if Nacional wins, they will maintain the second position in the Apertura, so there will not be a derby in the Intermedio, except in a possible final.
