Under the leadership of Uruguayan coach Pablo Bengoechea, Alianza Lima returned to the top of Peruvian football and became a leading team in Peru, winning the national title in 2017, as well as finishing as runners-up in 2018 and 2019.

And one of the leaders in those Alianza teams was former goalkeeper Leao Butrón, who in 2017 was the hero of the great campaign where he earned the nickname 'San Leao' for his impressive saves that saved his team on more than one occasion. Between the Apertura and Clausura tournaments of 2017, the former goalkeeper played in 22 matches, conceding only 11 goals and keeping 13 clean sheets.
Didn't Bengoechea want Butrón at Alianza Lima?
In an interview with journalist Giancarlo Granda for his YouTube channel, the now retired footballer revealed unpublished details of his time in football, where he revealed that in his last stage with Alianza Lima, the Uruguayan coach no longer had him in his plans and expressed it to him, despite being one of the team's leaders.
"I have nothing to complain about if there comes a time when the coach says, 'I no longer want to count on you.' It's valid and it's within his rights," revealed Leao. However, he added that he holds coach Bengoechea in high regard. "I consider Pablo to be one of the best Alianza coaches," he declared.
