The New York City FC of Alexander Callens reported that they loaned Argentine Valentín Castellanos, top scorer of the last season in the North American league (MLS), to Girona in Spain.

Both the New York team, the current champion of the MLS, and Girona, recently promoted to the Spanish first division, belong to the same business group, the City Football Group (CFG).

The CFG is the majority shareholder of numerous teams on four continents, including Manchester City, the jewel of the group, and Montevideo City Torque.

"Although it is difficult to leave this club, I firmly believe that it is the right time to move to Europe, which has always been a personal dream", said 'Taty' Castellanos, 23 years old, in a statement from the New York City FC.

"I feel confident and prepared for a new challenge", emphasized the striker from Mendoza, whose loan has a period of one season, until June 2023.

Castellanos never played professionally in Argentina and at the age of 17 he left the country to join Universidad de Chile. After a spell at Montevideo City Torque, in the Uruguayan second division, he was sent to the New York City FC in 2019.

His breakthrough as a goalscorer happened last year, scoring 19 goals in 32 matches that propelled the franchise to their first MLS title.

In this campaign, he also led the top scorers' table with 13 goals in 17 matches and in April he became the first Argentine to score four goals in a MLS game, in the 6-0 victory against Real Salt Lake.

With his move to Girona about to be finalized, New York City FC fans bid farewell to Castellanos on Saturday's match with banners and ovations, their most prolific scorer since the departure of Spanish David Villa. AFP
