Australia defeated the United Arab Emirates in the Asian playoff and will face the Peruvian national team on June 13th for direct qualification to the 2022 Qatar World Cup, in a match whose winner will join Group D with France, Denmark, and Tunisia. Although this may seem like an easy pass for Ricardo Gareca's team, history tells a different story.
The day Australia surprised Uruguay
On November 16, 2005, the Australian national team hosted Uruguay in Sydney for the second leg of the playoff for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The team, led at the time by Jorge Fossati, were the clear favorites after winning the first leg 1-0 with a goal by Darío Rodríguez at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo.
However, they couldn't repeat the performance and were surprisingly defeated despite having many scoring opportunities. The match went into overtime and later into penalty shootout.

Uruguay eliminated from the 2006 World Cup
The Socceroos scored the first penalty through Harry Kewell, while Darío Rodríguez missed his and left the Uruguayan national team behind on the scoreboard. In the second round, Lucas Neill scored the 2-0 for the Australians. However, Gustavo Varela scored the first goal for the Uruguayans, making it 2-1.
Tony Vidmar scored the third for the Kangaroos, but Fabián Estoyanoff did the same to make it 3-2. Mark Viduka missed his shot and it seemed that Uruguay could turn the tide, but Marcelo Zalayeta couldn't take advantage of the error and left the fate of the Celeste in the hands of the Australian John Aloisi, who managed to convert his penalty and surprise the football world, winning the shootout 4-2 and eliminating the Uruguayans from the World Cup.
