The president of the Peruvian Institute of Sport (IPD), Óscar Fernández talked this Tuesday with the program Fútbol Como Cancha of RPP Noticias and made it clear how important it will be to hold the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. This comes after a new wave of criticism due to the emergency the north of Peru is facing.
"The Games are a commitment of the State, a national commitment. They were sought twice and Peru committed to it. The first time was after the earthquake in Ica, and we narrowly missed it, we came second," Fernández began. According to the head of IPD, the country can meet the needs it is facing in the north while also hosting the sports event.
Political interests? During the interview, he was also asked if he believes there are political motives behind the criticism and intentions of resigning from organizing the Pan American Games. Óscar Fernández's response was not specific, and he preferred not to think badly of those who do it.
"I prefer to always prioritize the good faith of all opinion leaders, political leaders, and those from the Congress. What I see is that very few people understand high-performance sports. Many do not know the implications it carries," he concluded to minimize such opinions.
