Gaspar Mass Stadium hosts historic football final
This Friday, Gaspar Mass Stadium will once again host a final, the first of its kind that seeks to unify college American football in Mexico. The Auténticos Tigres, champions of ONEFA, will face off against Aztecas UDLAP, champions of Conadeip, to determine who is the best team in the country this season.
Last week, after competing in the Roberto Méndez Bowl in the same venue, UANL became champions for the seventh time in their history by defeating Pumas CU, earning the right to advance to the inaugural edition of a bowl game that defines the best team in Mexican university football.
The Auténticos (8-1) had an undefeated season against ONEFA teams, only losing to Aztecas in previous interleague matches. However, under the leadership of coach Juan Antonio Zamora, they have become the champion team in his first season as head coach, with the best offense in the league, scoring 324 points, and the second-best defense, allowing only 169 points.
On the other hand, UDLAP dethroned Borregos Monterrey as the 2015 champions in a tightly contested final at the Temple of Pain, which ended in a 43-40 victory for the team from Puebla. They will be the first representatives of Conadeip in this historic Bowl.
The "Green Tribe" finished their season with a perfect 10-0 record, ranking third in defense league-wide but first within the stronger group, scoring 310 points and only allowing 110 points, making them the second-best in this category.
Thus, the best teams from the two leagues will compete for the first time to showcase their supremacy on the football field. This bowl game, previously agreed upon by both associations, will be hosted by ONEFA this year, but the next edition in 2017 will be hosted by Conadeip, who will choose the venue.
