Luis Llontop will be a reinforcement for Melgar for the league playoffs. After being suspended for two years for testing positive in a doping test, the former Universitario de Deportes goalkeeper returns to the field with the Arequipa team. This Monday afternoon he will sign his contract and it will be official.
The goalkeeper completed his suspension last May, but he couldn't find a team. However, he continued to train daily on his own: in Lima, in the mornings, he trained at the Miguel Grau del Callao and in the afternoons he continued with his workouts at the gym. In addition, while he was in Miami, he continued training with Jesús Manuel Purizaga.
"I never thought about quitting football. On the contrary, those were months that I dedicated to continue training, to keep improving even if I wasn't on the field because a professional is a professional here and anywhere," he commented.
Even during the time he couldn't play, Luis Llontop dedicated himself to music and released a music video for his song 'Pienso en ti'.
Why was he suspended?
Universitario de Deportes won the championship in 2013 and qualified for the 2014 Copa Libertadores where they were placed in Group 1 alongside Vélez Sarsfield from Argentina, The Strongest from Bolivia, and Atlético Paranaense from Brazil. In the visit of the Peruvian team to the Brazilian team on March 20, Luis Llontop was randomly selected for the doping test.
Doping tests take time to show results, so it was not until May 21, 2014 that it was known that Llontop tested positive for having consumed anabolic steroids, a substance prohibited by CONMEBOL and FIFA.
On August 1 of the same year, it was determined that Luis Llontop would be suspended for twenty-four months (the suspension was counted from the day the results were released). Universitario de Deportes separated him from their squad and managed to terminate his contract.
