Independiente del Valle breaks 25-year streak of Argentine and Brazilian dominance in Copa Libertadores
Independiente del Valle has not only eliminated Boca Juniors from the Copa Libertadores, but has also managed to break a 25-year streak in which Argentine and Brazilian teams held hegemony.
Since 1991, Brazilian and Argentine teams had always been present in a Copa Libertadores final. The last match that didn't feature any club from these countries was the one played between Olimpia and Colo Colo. The latter would be crowned champions.
In that final, two goals from Luis Pérez and one from Leonel Herrera allowed Colo Colo to win the Copa Libertadores in 1991.
