This Tuesday after the first leg play off between Universitario vs Corinthians for the Copa Sudamericana, played at Neo Química Arena stadium in Sao Paulo, the Universitario's physical trainer, Sebastián Avellino, was arrested by the Brazilian police after being accused of making racist gestures towards the stands.
According to Brazilian media, the member of the 'U' coaching staff imitated a monkey towards the Timão fans at the end of the match, which ended 1-0 in favor of the São Paulo team.
Avellino was taken to the Special Criminal Court (JECRIM) in Itaquera to provide testimony. Corinthians fans who reported the physical trainer for making the racist gesture also arrived at the same place. Officials from Universitario de Deportes were also present.
Corinthians achieved a slight advantage by defeating Universitario 1-0 on Tuesday in Sao Paulo, in the first leg match of the play-off for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana 2023.
The 'Timão', who compete in the tie after finishing in third place in Group E of the Copa Libertadores, won with a goal from forward Felipe Augusto (78), 19 years old, at Neo Química Arena stadium.
Universitario, who is seeking to qualify for the next round after finishing second in Group G of the Sudamericana, won by the Brazilian team Goiás, was unable to impose itself against an inexperienced team.
