'Torito' was one of the promises of the merengue squad after joining in 2017, that's how he was playing in the Promotion and Reserves Tournament. On his part, he managed to make his professional debut and was even able to score his first official goal in the 2021 season.
After some time, Mauro Cantoro surprised when referring to his son's time at Universitario de Deportes. That's where he confessed that the 20-year-old forward did not join the merengue squad in the 2013 season for a special reason.
"When I returned to (Peru) in 2013, they wanted to take Tiago to 'U', I said I don't want to because they will say 'he goes because of his dad', I don't care, if he plays or not is his matter. So I took him to San Martín to play, I have no history at San Martín, everyone plays there, they rotate so that the boys don't feel bad," Cantoro said.
"Three or four years passed and they had already told me to take him to 'U', the philosophy of 'everyone plays' doesn't seem right to me personally because when a kid reaches the professional level, it's not 'everyone plays', it's 'the best plays' to compete is what kids are taught," he concluded.
