The Regatas player explained that her gesture of silence was directed towards a woman who had been insulting her and her teammates in the four finals of the Liga Nacional Superior de Vóley against Alianza Lima.

He spoke out. Regatas Lima achieved the desired three-time championship in the 2023 National Superior Volleyball League by defeating Alianza Lima 3-1 in the finals. However, an incident sparked controversy in this playoff. Flavia Montes gestured to silence the Blanquiazul fans - supposedly.

In that regard, the player herself came forward to explain her gesture and make it clear that it was not directed at the Alianza Lima fans, but at a woman who had been insulting her and her teammates throughout the series.

What did Flavia Montes say?

“The gesture I made was specifically for a person who doesn't know what empathy or respect for a deceased relative is. Since the first final, I have received insults about my skin color and words that I cannot write or repeat because we are on a program,” she asserted on Movistar Deportes.

“Karla (Ortiz) and I warmed up near the Alianza (Lima) fans and they always insulted us, talked about me, about the color of my skin, they gave me nicknames that… I have my own name. My name is Flavia Montes. And they shouldn't call me 'miss' or failure,” she added.

“The lady was there during all four games insulting us. She mocked the death of my teammate Karla Ortiz (a relative of the player), and she played a dirty trick on me during the match, I have to admit it because it was unsportsmanlike. I have to set a good example for all the girls who watch me, but I also want to show them that nobody should trample on us and I won't bow my head,” Flavia Montes concluded.
