The Promotion and Reserves Tournament 2023 will be played again in the country and this time it will be integrated by the 19 teams of the Liga 1. This tournament will also be televised and the broadcast will be carried out by the channels of Nativa TV, Liga 1 channel, and the FPF Play digital platform. This announcement comes amid criticism of the poor performance of the Peruvian National Team's youth selections in international tournaments (for example, in the U17 and U20 South American tournaments).
Jesús Gonzales, manager of the Professional Football League (LFP), explained that for this new season, the competition format will consist of a decentralized regular phase, where the participating clubs will play against each other in a single round. Subsequently, the top 12 teams will go to the playoffs.
"We will try to make as much of the tournament as possible mirror the Liga1 Betsson Clausura fixture, where the 19 teams will play against each other in a single round. Subsequently, the top 12 teams will advance to the playoffs, being divided into two groups. The championship will end in November with the semifinal and final stages that will be played home and away," Gonzales declares.
The players who will participate must be from the 2001 category, as this aims to observe players with a view to the next Sub-23 Pre-Olympic in 2024 and prepare the U-20 National Team for the category tournament that will be held in 2025.
Sub-18 Players on the field
Furthermore, Jesus Gonzales, manager of Liga 1, added that "each team must have four Sub-18 players on the field. In this way, the commitment to ensure that the clubs' work with young talents is constant is reaffirmed." Starting in May, this will also allow players to quickly move up to the first team.
Finally, unlike previous years, the winner of the Promotion and Reserves Tournament 2023 will not contribute additional points to the clubs in the Liga1 Betsson. These points benefited some teams in the championship or to qualify for international tournaments.
