Universitario de Deportes will make their debut in the 2023 Copa Sudamericana against Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata, whose coach, Sebastián Romero, praised the Peruvian team in the pre-match press conference in Argentina.
"Tomorrow is very important. This competition is very important, tomorrow we play at home against a representative team. We want to be prepared to play the best match," said the 44-year-old coach.
"Universitario is a big team and has a great coach. But we are prepared to play this type of competition and we are motivated," added Romero, who will not be able to count on the injured Eric Ramirez and Benjamín Dominguez.
In addition, it was revealed that midfielder Matías Miranda has suffered progressive necrosis (death of body tissue) of the graft from his operated right anterior cruciate ligament and will have to start the long recovery process again.
With these absences, Gimnasia's starting eleven would be Tomás Durso; Bautista Barros Schelotto, Leonardo Morales, Felipe Sánchez, and Matías Melluso; Maximiliano Comba, Ignacio Miramón, Alan Lescano, and Ivo Mammini or Alan Sosa; Franco Soldano and Cristian Tarragona.
