International challenge for the 'U'

After three consecutive victories - two in the Liga 1 and one in the Copa Sudamericana - Universitario de Deportes is breathing a better atmosphere and the team's performance is leaving positive sensations. Jorge Fossati, the intellectual creator of this upturn for the 'cremas', has had a rapid impact on his players and they are responding to him on the field. From there, although the championship has just begun, the fans have something to be hopeful for to win the Torneo Apertura.

The Uruguayan coach arrived in Peru to take the place left vacant by Carlos Compagnucci after his resignation and 'U' was in need of better results (they had three consecutive defeats). These did not take long to come and those doubts that appeared at the beginning of the year regarding the composition of the squad have started to dissipate.

Before Saturday's match against ADT at the Monumental stadium (8:00 p.m.), Fossati spoke with the media at Campo Mar and analyzed the present of Universitario since his arrival, how he found the players and the level he expects them to reach to improve the functioning of his game plan.

“I found a nervous and anxious team. When you play for a big team and you don't get results, you can react like that. From the first day we worked on correcting that. I demand a lot in my work and I want the players to always improve,” said the 'charrúa'.

Likewise, the 'Flaco' gave his perspective on what it means for him that his team plays well. “The team that plays well is the one that stands out in attack and defense. If you create twenty situations, but you are reached fifteen times, you did something wrong and consequently you did not play well,” he added.

Universitario will not have it easy against ADT, although on paper they are clearly the favorite. The team from Tarma has gone four games without a defeat - two wins and two draws - and has a squad that has shown it is capable of going head to head with any opponent. Franco Navarro's team already took a point from the Alberto Gallardo stadium when they faced Sporting Cristal and they hope to do the same at the 'Monu'.

International challenge for the 'U'

Universitario will have to plan their next matches thinking about the Copa Sudamericana, as they will now have to exploit the squad they have in two tournaments at the same time. The team from Ate will find out their group on March 27th when the draw takes place in Luque, Paraguay. Remember that the group stage will start during the week of April 5th and end in the week of June 28th.

If 'U' wants to qualify for the next stage of the international tournament, they will have to finish in the top two of their group. If they finish at the top, they will advance directly to the round of 16, while if they finish in second position, they will have to play the round of 32 against one of the third-placed teams from the Copa Libertadores groups.
