The Congress of the Republic debated on Tuesday, December 20, the proposal promoted by the president of the Constitution Commission, Hernando Guerra, and approved the advance of general elections with a total of 93 votes in favor, 30 against and 1 abstention out of a total of 124 congressmen attending the plenary session.
Regarding the debate and votes, Perú Libre congressmen and other left-wing benches together with some legislators from Renovación Popular voted against the decision to advance elections for 2024.
It is also important to remember that last Friday, congressmen failed to approve the text presented by Guerra, which moved forward the electoral process, but they reached the minimum 66 votes in favor to continue discussing the issue in another congressional session.
Unlike last Friday, on this occasion, the Plenary of Congress approved the constitutional reform for the advancement of general elections, which, as indicated, will take place in April 2024.
Finally, it is clear to understand that this adjustment will affect the presidential and legislative mandate, which would cease in July of the same year. However, it should be noted that this approval of the reform is subject to a second vote by Congress in the next legislative period.
