October comes with two long holidays. One is for the 143rd anniversary of the Battle of Angamos, celebrated on October 8th; and the other is connected to All Saints' Day, celebrated on November 1st. So many people will have the opportunity to take advantage of two holiday bridges to rest, spend time with family, or travel. But, what days will they fall on?
Holidays are eagerly awaited not only by workers to rest, but also by the tourism sector. Nearly one million people have traveled within the country during the last holiday for Fiestas Patrias; and more than 750,000 for the Battle of Junín and Santa Rosa de Lima in August, generating significant economic activity, according to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.
HOW MANY HOLIDAYS DOES OCTOBER HAVE AND WHAT IS THE REASON?
This month will have a national holiday on October 8th in commemoration of the Battle of Angamos, which was a naval confrontation of the War of the Pacific in 1879. It is a significant day for the Navy and also for the history of Peru, in which the ship Huáscar was captured by the Chilean forces. It also honors the hero Miguel Grau, who stands out for his honor, chivalry, and bravery.
WHAT DAYS WILL BE LONG HOLIDAYS IN OCTOBER?
October will have two long holidays that can be used for traveling and spending time with family, among other things.
- Battle of Angamos: it will be in honor of the Battle of Angamos, which is on Saturday, October 8th. The government has decreed Friday, October 7th as a non-working day for the public sector, which also joins with Sunday, October 9th, which is a regular day off.
- All Saints' Day: although it is celebrated on November 1st, which falls on a Tuesday this year, the government has decreed Monday, October 31st as a non-working day for the public sector, which will be combined with Saturday, October 29th, and Sunday, October 30th, which are regular days off. In this way, four consecutive days off can be enjoyed.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOLIDAY AND A NON-WORKING DAY?
Although both days can be used for rest, take note of the differences:
Holiday
The holiday is a national festive day in which workers, both in the public and private sectors, can stop working. The same applies to students, who do not attend classes. In the event that an employee works on a holiday, they will receive additional remuneration, which is usually triple, even if it is a Sunday.
Non-Working Day
The non-working day is decreed by the government and is aimed at the public sector. In the private sector, the employer will decide whether or not their employees work. If an employee works normally, this does not mean that they will receive extra payment, as they will only receive their regular salary without increases. For those who rest, they must compensate for those hours with overtime, work on Saturdays, or consider them as part of their vacation.
