The dry law is one of the less popular restrictions imposed by the National Jury of Elections (JNE) for voters, but it is important to ensure the correct development of the elections. Do you know when it starts and until when it will last in these Peru's Regional and Municipal Elections of 2022?
The dry law is part of the restrictions provided by electoral legislation and it refers to the prohibition of the sale of alcoholic beverages, but not their consumption, so sanctions are directed towards the sellers, informed the JNE.
The electoral entity has announced that operations will be carried out in Lima and various regions of the country in order to enforce this and other restrictions and thus guarantee that the voting on October 2nd will proceed normally.
WHEN DOES THE DRY LAW START AND END?
Alcoholic beverages cannot be sold from 8:00 am on Saturday until 8:00 am on Monday. As a detail, the Organic Law of Elections establishes that "from 8:00 am of the day before the voting day, until 8:00 am of the day following the elections, the sale of any kind of alcoholic beverages is not allowed, and the establishments dedicated exclusively to this sale are closed".
WHAT HAPPENS IF ESTABLISHMENTS DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE DRY LAW?
Stores, bars, or other establishments that fail to comply with the so-called dry law will receive a fine of not less than S/2,790 and the responsible parties may receive a sentence of up to six months in prison.
"Failure to comply with this provision is punishable by imprisonment of no more than six months, a fine of not less than 2,790 soles, and the accessory penalty of disqualification for the same period as the sentence, which may consist of incapacitating the convicted person from performing the function or work they performed," indicates the JNE on its page about the restrictions in the last week leading up to the October 2nd elections.
