The Saudi Professional League 2022-23 starts this week with high expectations among Al-Fateh fans for this new campaign. However, the team led by Greek coach Georgios Donis did not have their best performance and, with Christian Cueva and Alex Valera as starters, they lost at home against Al-Taawon (0-2).
The debut of the squad where the Peruvian footballers play was highly anticipated by the fans and there was a special atmosphere in the stands of the Prince Abdullah bin Jalawi Stadium in Al-Hasa. Things started well on the field, with dominance and some goal opportunities, but there was no effectiveness.
On the other hand, Al-Taawon took advantage to create danger on the counterattacks and managed to take the lead in the score, just before halftime, through Leandre Tawamba (45+3′). Due to these circumstances, Al-Fateh had to react in the second half, but the situation did not improve: Fahad Ayidh Al Rashidi scored the 0-2 (57′).
Due to the disadvantage, coach Georgios Donis made some changes in his strategy and Valera, who was making his official debut, was sacrificed. The former Universitario player left the field at the 65th minute, allowing the entry of Ayman Al Khulaif.
Meanwhile, Christian Cueva completed the match, but could not change the outcome of the game. Let's remember that the national midfielder scored eight goals, in addition to providing five assists, in the previous season of the Saudi Arabian league and will seek to improve his numbers, this time alongside Alex in attack.
When do Cueva and Valera play?
The next presentation of Al-Fateh will be for the second match of the Saudi Professional League, away against Al Batin. This match is scheduled for Wednesday, August 31 at 10:55 a.m. (Peruvian time), at the Al-Batin Club Stadium. Barring any setbacks, Christian Cueva and Alex Valera will be starters.
