The second leg match between Palmeiras and Atlético Mineiro for the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores was one of the most exciting in the competition so far. After a 2-2 draw in the first leg, Palmeiras, the current champion, was playing at home, but they faced difficulties with two expulsions, first at the 28th minute and then at the 80th minute.

Gustavo Scarpa was the second expulsion and left Palmeiras on the brink of elimination. A shot off the post and the expulsion in injury time on Eduardo Vargas gave the two-time Copa Libertadores champion a chance to fight back.

By regulation, expelled players cannot remain on the bench, so Scarpa had to follow the penalty shootout from the locker room, alongside the assistant coach, who also received a red card for strong protest against Colombian referee Wilmar Roldán.

The excitement of the player was intense until the penalty kick and the qualifying goal. After the match, Gustavo came out of the dressing room to celebrate with his teammates the passage to the semifinals.

Palmeiras is just one round away from reaching its third consecutive final. They won the previous two against Brazilian teams: Flamengo and Santos. They are aiming for their third consecutive title, something that hasn't been seen since Estudiantes de la Plata in the 70s.
