Without a doubt, the happiest memory of Sporting Cristal in a Copa Libertadores happened in the 1997 edition of the tournament. On that occasion, the blue team managed to reach the final after defeating rivals such as Vélez Sarsfield, Bolívar, and Racing Club, which they eliminated in an unforgettable semifinal series.
For the joy of the younger fans of the Peruvian team, the official Copa Libertadores account announced through its social media platforms that they will re-stream the match that certified Cristal's qualification to the final of the competition, via Facebook Watch.
"We have an amazing match to remember! We go back to the 1997 Libertadores semifinals rematch to witness a historic victory: the day Sporting Cristal defeated Racing to advance to the final," promoted the Conmebol Libertadores. The broadcast can be watched on Wednesday, February 17, starting at 5:00 p.m. (Peruvian time) and 7:00 p.m. (Argentine time).
The match, played at the Estadio Nacional, is one of the most internationally remembered matches of the current Liga 1 champion. Cristal and Racing played the semifinals rematch after the Academy won the first leg 3-2, so a fairly even duel was expected in Lima.
Luis Alberto Bonnet and Julio 'Coyote' Rivera scored two goals in the first half to go into halftime with a 2-1 score. In the second half, the rythymnists sealed the series with another goal by Bonnet and one by Nolberto Solano for the definitive 4-1 score.
