It has been 3 years since she was consecrated in the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, and since that tournament the name of Mafer Reyes has continued to shine. Today she is the only Peruvian who will participate in the second leg of the world circuit, and she will also seek the podium at the 2022 Pan American Surfing Championships in Panama. The world dream continues for Mafer Reyes
August starts off with a bang for the athlete trained on Makaha Beach. From August 3rd, she will be part of the second leg of the World Tour, which will take place in Huntington, United States. "I have been preparing hard for this competition, as I need to score points to reach the third and final leg with the possibility of becoming the champion," explains Reyes.
As you may recall, in the first leg of the World Tour, held in Australia in May, the ocean conditions did not play in her favor. She currently ranks 17th out of 25 competitors. Ahead of her is the challenge of representing not only Peru but all of South America, as she is the only qualified surfer from our region, along with Brazilian Chloe Calmon.
"First place in Huntington earns 5,000 points and second place earns 3,900. Then, the third leg is worth 10,000 points, so nothing is settled. I have already finished fifth in the ISA World Championships, nothing is impossible, that's why I'm training so hard. I'm not going to give up so easily," she says.
Mafer Reyes aims for the podium at the Pan American Championships
Once her participation in the world competition is over, Mafer Reyes will fly directly to Panama, where the 2022 Pan American Surfing Championships will take place from August 7th to 13th. The longboard surfer will compete in the Open category, knowing that competitors from other countries will be watching her performance closely.
"I have never surfed at Playa Venao in Panama, so it is also a challenge in that sense. I know there is a lot of expectation because I finished as the runner-up in Lima 2019, but I prefer to advance step by step, phase by phase, until I achieve my goal of stepping on the podium," she comments.
Peru will be represented by its main figures: in the men's team, Piccolo Clemente and Lucas Garrico Lecca will participate, while in the women's team, Ana Camila Kaspar and Mafer Reyes will compete. Let's go Peru! Yes, we can!
