There is no doubt that Roberto Martinez was an important member of Universitario de Deportes, where he was able to demonstrate his quality as a forward on more than one occasion. In 2012, the former footballer was one of the accused of intercepting the telephones of the Regional Government of Callao, a crime that would have been committed while he served as a public official.

Although Ernesto Torres was identified as the main perpetrator of the crime, the authorities determined that the former U member instigated the actions initially.

The prosecution was seeking a sentence of three years and four months for Roberto Martinez. However, after an extensive investigation that lasted around 6 years, the Judicial Power finally decided to acquit the former forward due to lack of evidence.

It is worth noting that, although the case of the "wiretapping" is now history, the present has once again seen the former player in trouble. In reality, Roberto Martinez is currently being investigated for having paid bribes to the mayor of the town of Huamachuco, in La Libertad.
