The national champion team of Universitario de Deportes in 2009 is remembered for several figures that contributed to its success, starting with coach Juan Reynoso, midfielder Donny Neyra, and goalkeeper Raúl Fernández. The defensive line of that team also had standout names, such as Carlos Galván, captain of the club, and John Galliquio, who won up to three titles with the 'U'.
In the case of the Argentine, his arrival to the Ate team occurred in 2007 after playing for important teams in the region, such as Racing in his native country, Atlético Mineiro in Brazil, and Olimpia in Paraguay. The following year, he won his first title with the students, the Apertura Tournament 2008, and was one of the regular starters.
In 2009, he acquired even greater importance within the team with Reynoso's arrival, who entrusted him with the captain's armband and made him the 'leader'. His balance of that campaign was 32 games played, including the two in the final against Alianza Lima, which ended 2-0 on aggregate, and two goals scored.

After celebrating his first national championship in Peru, the 'Negro' remained with the merengues until 2011. He played two more seasons at César Vallejo, where he retired in 2013, after which he started 2014 as an assistant coach at UTC, although he would later take over the reins of the Cajamarca bench.
In addition to having coached UTC, Galván was in charge of clubs such as Serrato Pacasmayo, Los Caimanes, Sport Loreto, and Sport Chavelines, his last experience as a coach in 2019. Currently, he works as a panelist and frequent guest on various internet sports programs and is one of the visible faces of Embajadur Crema, an initiative led by his former teammate Rainer Torres.
John Galliquio
Galliquio, on the other hand, has a much longer bond with Universitario. He played with them in five different periods. After winning the championship for the first time in 2000, he left abroad in 2002 and returned two years later. Except for the 2006 season, part of 2007 and 2008, he spent the entire period between 2004 and 2013 in the crema team, during which he added two more titles to his personal record.

The first of these was in 2009 when he became a pillar of the defense by accumulating 33 appearances, including the two games of the final against Alianza, and scoring one goal throughout the tournament. Four years later, he would lift the trophy again, this time with 23 matches and two goals in the season, but his contract was not renewed.
In 2014, he joined the ranks of León de Huánuco and in 2015 he arrived at Melgar, where he won his last local championship. In 2016, he returned to Universitario, stayed until 2017, and finally retired in 2018 with Serrato Pacasmayo.
Currently, Galliquio remains away from football activity and the latest news he has made were related to the accusations made by his ex-wife, who accused him of assault and death threats. In 2020, there was even a warrant for the arrest of the former player issued by the Superior Court of Justice of Ica.
