Universitario de Deportes has gone eight years without winning the national title. The last time was on December 18, 2013 against Real Garcilaso (now called Cusco FC). The cream team prevailed through a penalty shootout and won their 26th trophy.
The title won in Huancayo has left a mark in the hearts of all cream fans, as three matches were played to determine the champion. That squad achieved its goal under the direction of Ángel Comizzo, who boosted several key players.

The first final between the creams and the Cusco team took place in the imperial city, where the locals prevailed 3-2. This result forced 'U' to win the return match no matter what, and with a spectacular performance by Diego Guastavino, the merengues defeated Freddy 'Petróleo' García's team 3-0.
After a victory for each team, the tiebreaker match was held in Huancayo. The decisive match was opened by Jhon Galliquio with a great goal. Minutes later, Rolando Bogado equalized to send the game into extra time. The score remained unchanged and they went to a penalty shootout.
