A ghost has started haunting the minds of the "grones": 10 years ago, after winning the first leg of the final, Alianza's fortune turned. Will the history change on Sunday?
The last Sunday, Alianza Lima threw a party at the National Stadium. With the support of their fans in the stands, the blanquiazules took revenge against Sporting Cristal: they were the only team that beat them in 2021, and they got closer to the title by winning 1-0 in the first final of the League 1.
Although Carlos Bustos' team did not have control of the ball: Cristal registered 62% of possession, they were more effective and at 33 minutes, after a brilliant combination between 'Zorrito', including a heel pass, and Hernán Barcos, the 'Pirata' scored the only goal of the match with a left-foot shot.
The result makes the glory in Peruvian soccer taste to the 'íntimos' (nickname of Alianza Lima fans). However, these last two days a ghost has started to haunt the fans: 10 years ago, after winning the first leg of the final, Alianza Lima ended up losing to Juan Aurich and was surpassed.
A bitter drink
In 2011, Alianza Lima defined the national title against Juan Aurich and, after winning 2-1 in Chiclayo, the 'íntimos' had the table set at Matute to be crowned champions, but things didn't go as planned: they lost 1-0, a score that forced a third match.
It was then that on December 14 of that year, 'Ciclón' and the blanquiazules faced each other at the National Stadium in a third match. The game ended 0-0 in regular and extra time. For this reason, everything was decided on penalties and there, Juan Aurich ended up smiling.
