Backus: workers announce strike
The National Union of Workers of Backus and Johnston S.A.A. announced that Backus workers will start an indefinite strike on Tuesday, September 28, 2021. Likewise, this measure will affect 90% of beer production in the country.
The announced strike will take place in the plants of Ate (Lima), Arequipa, Cusco, Huarochirí, Maltería (Ñaña), and Motupe (Lambayeque), where beers such as Cristal, Pilsen, Cusqueña, Arequipeña, etc. are produced.
It's not only beers that would stop being produced, but also other beverages such as Guaraná soda, San Mateo water, Maltin Power, etc., emblematic products of the brewery.
The reason for the work stoppage, according to them, is the alleged intransigence of the company to resolve their claim statement for 2021-2022, corresponding to a collective bargaining.
"This despite the profitability obtained, amounting to a net profit of S/ 1,264,177,000 at the end of 2020; and the second quarter of 2021, in which it has obtained a net profit of S/ 724,400,000," reads the statement from the group of workers.
On the other hand, the company has indicated that it maintains a contingency plan to continue supplying its suppliers, customers, and consumers with its classic brand products.
