On Monday, Vasco da Gama announced former Brazilian midfielder Ramón Menezes, champion of the 1998 Copa Libertadores with the Rio de Janeiro team, as their new head coach for a season that is still suspended due to the coronavirus crisis.
Menezes had already been the interim coach of the team for about two weeks, when Abel Braga was fired abruptly after only three months in charge.
The club's board of directors met on Monday and decided to confirm him in the first team.
Menezes, 47, and considered an idol of the Vasco fans, returned to the club at the beginning of 2019 to work as a permanent assistant coach.
As a player, he experienced the best moments of his sporting career with the Rio de Janeiro team in the late 90s, when he added the 1997 Brazilian Championship and the 1998 Libertadores to his long list of achievements.
Vasco also announced the return of Antonio Lopes to the club, who was the team's coach during those golden years, although this time he will assume the role of new "technical coordinator", a position he has been performing in his recent clubs. EFE
